Our traditional Christmas Lunch with our ladies commenced with a welcome drink of prosecco and an opprtunity to gather in the bar and have a good natter with our friends.

Moving in to the dining room we doned our Christmas hats and enjoyed a traditional Christmas Turkey lunch.

Having finished the Christmas pudding and mince pies we welcomed Nick Dobson, our after-lunch speaker to tell about 'The Christmas Garden'.

Nick gave us a review of the various plants associated with Christmas, their historical significance, and tips for indoor gardening during the winter season. Along the way we had a selection of Christmas 'jokes' that didn't quite make it into the crackers!

The classic Poinsettia, the mainstay of Christmas indoor plants originates from a Mexican small tree and now 70 million are sold in the USA for $250 million in six weeks!

Apparently it is impractical to keep the poinsettia from year to year but a Christmas Cactus is a very good alternative.

Nick explained the symbolism of the Holly and Ivy and the history behind the introduction of the Christmas Tree. He recommended home grown vegetables for Christmas, especially sprouts!

Thank you Nick for a very colourful and informative talk. I didn't realise that Christmas trees were fond of the past, apparently it's because the present's beneath them!!
